Emma Thompson Discusses Branagh Affair

Emma Thompson has opened up about her ex-husband's alleged affair with Helena Bonham Carter.

Thompson, 54, said she had forgiven the actress for the affair with Kenneth Branagh – even though it resulted in the end of her marriage.

Thompson and Branagh first met in 1987 and married two years later, but they separated in 1995. At the time, they blamed the distance between them because of their work as the reason for their split. However, it was later alleged that Branagh had been carrying out an affair with actress Helena Bonham Carter.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Thompson described the affair as: "All blood under the bridge. You can't hold on to anything like that. I just think... pfft.

"It's pointless. I haven't got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago."

Branagh, who is now 52, was said to have started seeing Helena Bonham Carter while they both filmed 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' in 1994. They did eventually go public with their relationship, before separating in 1999.

Continuing with the subject, Thompson suggested that both she and Bonham Carter are similar, explaining: "Oh we are [alike]. Being slightly mad and a bit fashion-challenged. Perhaps that's why Ken loved us both. She's a wonderful woman, Helena."
