According to People.com, the New York socialite – who is currently pregnant with the music mogul's first child – reached an amicable divorce settlement with her husband in August. However, the Silverman's 10-year marriage was only legally dissolved in the New York Civil Court yesterday (4 December). It was previously reported that the former couple would share joint custody of their seven-year-old son, Adam, while Ms Silverman is thought to have walked away with more than $2m, despite allegedly having an affair with 54-year-old Cowell.
The dissolution of the Silverman's marriage means Lauren is now able to marry her lover.
Recently, Cowell has teased the media that he could be about to pop the question, and in October, he posted a series of cryptic messages on his Twitter account, leading many to speculate that it was about an impending engagement announcement.
At the time, he wrote: "Excited to reveal some news in the next few weeks. Am feeling very positive right now. It's been hard work but nothing should be too easy.
"In life you can obsess on other people's failures or focus on your own mistakes and work hard to make sure you don't repeat them.
"But hard work and focus gives you a chance to turn a corner. And that's how I am feeling right now."
The couple, who are expecting their first child together in February, are reportedly planning to marry shortly after the birth. Silverman is said to have agreed to marry in a traditional church ceremony near her future mother-in-law's home in Sussex, South East England, which will later be followed by a "blessing" in her native US where her family and friends would be in attendance.
