The former footballer made the admission during a recent event where he spoke to an audience of Times newspaper readers. He added that his son has inherited his competitive personality.
Revealing that he once told Romeo to set his alarm for 6am to prepare for a three-mile run around London, Beckham was left surprised when his son was ready and waiting to go early the next morning.
He explained: "At 6am on the dot, I felt a tug on my arm and I heard, 'Daddy it's time to get up.' He's one of those annoying runners who always want to be one step in front of you.
"We ran three and a half miles and the third mile was the quickest of them all."
Beckham, 38, added that he also finds it difficult to take part in amicable soccer games with his children - Romeo, Brooklyn, 14, Cruz, 8, and two-year-old Harper - because it reignites his competitive spirit.
"I just like to win, even if it's playing in the garden with my kids. I take it easy on them to a certain point, but they have got to learn to win," he added. "They do actually win most of the time, certainly when there are three of them against me."
The footballer-turned-model also said he felt it is important that he and his wife Victoria, push their children in order to help them pursue their dreams.
The Beckhams started dating in 1997 and in 1999, they married at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. The couple's infant son, Brooklyn, was the ring bearer at the ceremony.
Their second son, Romeo, was born in 2002 and their third child, Cruz, was born in 2005. In 2011, the pair welcomed their fourth child, a girl called Harper.
