According to the Express & Star, 35-year-old Gurmail Joshan - who has a wife and two children in India - organised a sham civil partnership ceremony to be held in Gretna Green, Scotland, four days in advance. On the day of the ceremony, however, both Joshan and a Slovakian man were arrested by officials from the Home Office.
During the planned swoop, authorities found one of the wedding's witnesses in possession of Joshan's bank card, as well as an envelope containing £1,000 in cash.
Appearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Joshan was given a 12-month prison sentence. Judge Michael Challinor told the accused: "You determined upon a sham marriage in order to defeat the immigration laws.
"That is a serious matter, as you know.
"People must understand that if they enter into sham marriages for the purpose you did that they will go to prison, even though they are of good character.
"It was a relatively unsophisticated operation. Your motive was not to commit associated crime but was for economic reasons."
It is understood registry officials became suspicious of Joshan because he had previously tried to arrange three separate marriages for himself. The court was told how both Joshan and a Czech woman he planned to marry, had failed to attend on each of the three occasions. When he did not attend the first ceremony in January 2013, a member of staff contacted Joshan to see where he was. He replied that snow had prevented him from travelling, but he later claimed to tell staff that his wife had been in hospital. Staff became suspicious and 'flagged' his name.
Joshan pleaded guilty to a single charge of assisting unlawful immigration to a member state.
