The research, which was carried out by the Open University, involved more than 5,000 people who were asked to rate the quality of their relationship. It emerged that those without children were happier overall. They were also more satisfied in their relationship and ultimately more likely to feel valued by their other half.
For those who did not have children, both men and women ranked the quality of their relationship more highly than those who were parents. They also did more to "maintain" their relationship, such as going out together or talking, as opposed to those with children.
Interestingly however, when asked to rate how happy the participants were with their lives, mothers were found to be happier than any other group, while childless women were the least happy.
The study is due to be presented at the British Library later this week. As part of its findings, it also revealed the small actions that are key to a happy relationship. This can include things like making a partner a cup of tea, or just saying 'thank you', but when it came to the relationship areas which brought the least satisfaction, couples said a partner driving too slowly, eating too loudly or leaving lights switched on were some of their bugbears. Furthermore, those who had been through a bad separation were more likely to maintain and strengthen their current relationship than those who had not.
Dr Jacqui Gabb, from the Open University, is quoted by the Daily Telegraph as saying: "This is a shift away from the idea that they are just failed relationships to be put in a cupboard and forgotten about.
"It shows they have learnt something through them, therefore it can be an enriching experience."
