Number Of NI Abortions Increase

The number of abortions carried out in Northern Ireland last year has increased.

According to figures released by the Department of Health, it said that 51 terminations were performed in hospitals in the region in 2013, 16 more than the previous year.

Northern Ireland's abortion laws are different to rest of the UK. A termination in NI can be carried out only to preserve the life of the mother, or if continuing with the pregnancy would have other serious, permanent physical or mental health effects.

In a statement, the Department of Health said the abortions were performed within legally acceptable and medically approved conditions.

It added that the South Eastern Health Trust had the highest number of abortions.

A majority of the women having a termination were over the age of 30, with 14 women aged 24 and under.
