Women Are Leaving Motherhood 'Too Late'

Professor Dame Sally Davies, England's Chief Medical Officer, has said the number of women choosing to delay motherhood until their late 30s and early 40s is a "worrying issue".

Speaking to a group of health professionals at an event organised by the Wellbeing of Women charity in London yesterday, Professor Dame Sally added that leaving it so late to start a family could reduce a women's chance of conception and potentially suffer an increase in medical risks.

According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, she said: "The steady shift to have children later, there are issues with that. We all assume we can have children later but actually we may not be able to."

She also admitted she was concerned that "many more women" are choosing not to have children, as fertility declines as women get older.

Her comments follow recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) that said one in five women now reach the age of 45 without starting a family.

However, Professor Dame Sally stressed that she was not suggesting women should have children earlier, saying: "It's not for me to tell women what to do."

In response, the Family Planning Association assured women they do not need to panic over the comments.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, a spokesperson for the association, Natika Halil, said: "Fertility doesn't just disappear overnight. While women should be mindful, let's not panic – you don't wake up at 34 and suddenly discover you can't have kids. There are a myriad of reasons why women can't conceive, it's not always linked to age."
