27% Of Children Own A Tablet - Study

Some 27% of British children under the age of eight – which is around 2.1 million children – now have a tablet.

The surprising statistic was published by uSwitch.com as part of their latest study which also found that almost four million children in Britain (29%) first learned to use a tablet or smartphone by the age of three. One in 10 (11%) were under two years old.

In 2013 alone, at least eight in 10 parents (84%) were found to splash out on the latest gadgets for their offspring, £462 each on average, or £5.6bn collectively. A majority of that total – £3.2bn – was on gadgets for Christmas alone. For 2014, 36% of parents expect to spend even more on technology. This comes despite 25% of mums and dads admitting that they spent too much on their children last year.

Elsewhere, children are most likely to own games consoles, with 91% of parents saying their kids own at least one device. Some 16% of parents felt their children are "addicted" to gadgets, with 26% saying their kids would "be lost" without them. As a result, almost three quarters of parents limit the number of hours their children spend using technology.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, said: "The term 'early adopters' now has a whole new meaning, with today's kids knowing their way around the latest tech before they're out of nappies.

"Once the gadget of choice for high-flyers and tech fans, the price of an entry-level tablet is now under £100, making them an attractive – and affordable – piece of kit for the whole family. They can also make lessons, homework and bedtime stories both fun and interactive, so it's little wonder that more British parents are caving in to demands from their tech-savvy children. Most tablet-owning parents will probably find their tots commandeer their touchscreen devices anyway."
