The research, which was carried out by diet firm Forza Supplements, found that the average women will embark on a diet 16 times during their life and lose a total of five stone.
This compares to the eight lovers they have, and interestingly, more than half of the women involved in the study admitted they had been on more diets than they had partners.
According to the findings, the average diet lasts just one month, with women most commonly losing between 5lbs and 7lbs; while some 27% of women admitted to giving up on their diet after just one week. A lack of willpower and boredom were two of the reasons cited by women for giving up on a diet, while most popular reason for starting a diet in the first place was a woman's unhappiness with her body shape. Just 1% of women said they went on a diet to please their other half.
Commenting on the poll, Managing Director at Forza Supplements, Lee Smith, said: "The fact that the typical British woman has twice as many diets as she has lovers suggests that staying slim is a daily battle for millions of women.
"It's great to see that women still overwhelmingly believe that diets work and can bring about a lifestyle change.
"The truth is that if you do knuckle down you can get the body you desire.
"At Forza, most of our clients are women in their 30s who are married or in settled relationships. They are comfortable with their partner and have allowed their weight to creep up."
