Officers Stop Suspected Sham Marriage

A man has been arrested just moments before he was due to take part in a suspected sham marriage.

Following a tip off, officers from the Home Office immigration enforcement team arrived at Weybridge Register Office on Tuesday morning (28 January).

A 28-year-old man, who is originally from Pakistan, was arrested at the scene. He was later found to be living in the country illegally having overstayed his visa.

The accused, who has not been named, was detained and now faces removal from the UK.

A Bulgarian women, 24, who was his 'would-be bride', was questioned by officers and later released. Following questioning, the pair were revealed to have provided inconsistent accounts of their relationship. They also shared no common language.

Paul Smith, Head of the Thames Valley & Surrey Home Office immigration enforcement team, said: "This is an example of the successful work we are doing to combat sham weddings and civil partnerships in Surrey.

"We work closely with registrars across the area to prevent people from abusing the marriage system in a bid to get round our immigration laws.

"Where we receive information that a wedding may be suspicious we will investigate and, if necessary, intervene and arrest those involved.

"I would urge anyone thinking of entering a sham marriage to think again as there is every chance that you will be detained and removed from the country."
