In 2002, shortly after appearing on the talent show, Gates and former model Price started dating. They managed to keep the relationship a secret, but as the singer was only 17 at the time, he admitted to feeling out of his depth.
Speaking about the relationship as part of The Big Reunion episode which is due to air next week, Gates, now 29, said: "I was very young when I was in this situation, I was seeing her for like four months and it all started to get really heavy.
"I was only 17, so I had to say, 'Right I'm only young I don't want to have a long-term relationship'."
The teenager – as well as many of his fans – were in for a shock, however, as Price then chose to go to the papers and expose the couple's affair. At the time, Gates denied it had ever happened.
He explained: "She then sold the story, so I just go, 'Oh no its all lies', which was the worst thing to do.
"The only thing I thought in my head to do was say, 'This never happened'. I simply didn't want my family to know about my sex life.
"I wasn't honest with anybody; my family, my friends, my management, so they all backed me. Then it just got worse."
Gates did not confess to the couple's relationship until almost a year after Price went to the papers.
The singer has always tried to keep his private life away from the spotlight. In 2002, he met Suzanne Mole and the pair started dating. They couple announced their engagement on New Years Eve in 2007 and were married the following July in a small, intimate ceremony. In April 2009, they welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Missy.
In October 2012, Gates revealed that he and Suzanne were no longer together.
For Price, she is now a mum-of-four and married to her third husband, Kieran Hayler.
