Judge Overturns Same-Sex Marriage Ban

A federal judge in America has ruled that Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

It is understood that this is the first time a southern state has had a ban on gay marriage overturned.

Currently, same-sex marriages are legal in 17 states in the US, with most of them located in north-east as well as Washington DC. The approval for the unions have, however, been introduced due to legislation, court rulings of a voter referendum.

In Virginia's case, the ruling was made by Judge Arenda Wright Allen after a gay couple launched legal proceedings. In making a ruling, the judge said the couple were right and the ban on the ceremony infringes on their rights and their freedom to marry.

Earlier this week, a federal judge in Kentucky said that the state must recognise gay marriages which have been performed elsewhere in the US. However, the judge failed to rule on the legality of same-sex marriages inside Kentucky itself. As a result, the current ban in the southern state remains in place.
