Man Arrested In Valentine's Sham Marriage

A man has been arrested just moments before he was due to take part in a suspected sham marriage.

The 29-year-old accused, who is understood to be from Kosovo, was about to marry a British woman, 20, at Blackburn Register Office on Valentine's Day. Shortly before the ceremony was expected to start however, Home Office immigration officers raided the venue.

It soon transpired that the groom-to-be was living in the UK illegally.

He was detained by officers and now faces deportation from the country.

The 'bride' was also questioned by officers, but later released.

Karen McDonough, Assistant Director of the Home Office's Lancashire Immigration Enforcement Team, is quoted as saying: "We are working closely with registrars to clamp down on sham weddings and civil partnerships.

"This operation is another example of the success that we are having.

"Where there are suspicions that a relationship may not be genuine we will investigate and, if necessary, intervene to stop it happening."
