The man, reported to be Liam Coughlan who was originally from Ireland, was a banker who worked for the World Bank in Vienna.
According to media, the 51-year-old was found to have died of natural causes at his Austrian home.
For his first wife, Linda, however, she was only informed of her partner's death when she tried to contact him. Ms Coughlan, who is 47 and from Limerick, is quoted by the local press as saying she called her estranged husband's office to speak to him, only to be told by reception that he had passed away.
She added: "I was then put through to someone who refused to believe I was his wife, and told me to my shock that actually his wife had already been informed.
"I tried to insist but he basically seemed to regard me as a crank and told me not to call again.
"They all said they knew his wife, and it wasn't me. He apparently never mentioned me."
Ms Coughlan had two children with the deceased, but while the couple had been estranged, they had not filed for divorce – at Mr Coughlan's request.
The banker, who is now said to be the subject of an investigation by Austrian police, is believed to have married for a second time a number of years ago. The couple are thought to have had a daughter together. The woman – who also lives in Ireland – was informed of Coughlan's death.
