Mother Criticised For Breastfeeding In Public

A woman from Staffordshire has been criticised for breastfeeding her baby in public.

Emily Slough, 27, said she was on a shopping trip with her eight-month-old daughter Matilda last Friday when she "discreetly" stopped to feed her. As she attended to her child, however, Ms Slough was unaware that someone had taken a photograph of her feeding her child and uploaded it to social networking site Facebook.

Speaking to the BBC, she explained: "I think somebody from the bar across the road from where I was feeding Matilda took a photo of me and posted it on Facebook, along with a caption saying I was a tramp.

"One of my friends messaged me to say they had seen it.

"I'm not the sort of person to get upset by things like that. At first I was just going to ignore it, but then I decided to make an example of it."

In response, Ms Slough decided to launch a protest. Her campaign has attracted 8,000 'likes' on Facebook, while more than 1,000 people are expected to attend a mass breastfeeding event which she has organised for Rugeley town centre this weekend.

Belinda Phipps, CEO of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT), said the behaviour of those criticising Ms Slough is "dreadful".

She added: "For good reason mothers feeding their babies are protected by law. The Equality Act, of October 2010, states that it is unlawful for mums to be discriminated against or treated unfavourably because they are breastfeeding in England, Wales or Scotland.

"Whether formula feeding or breastfeeding, it is important that mums are able to feed their baby whenever and wherever they need it. Any mother who chooses to breastfeed her baby should have the right to do so without harassment."
