The poll, commissioned by Europcar UK Group, found that an estate car is the vehicle least likely to make a lasting impression on a woman. It's probably therefore not surprising to discover that only 1% of drivers would therefore choose an estate car when trying to make that first important impression. This compares to a third of respondents who said they would go for a prestige car to impress a potential partner.
For women, Mercedes topped their list with 32% saying the car would make the best impression. Sports cars and coupes also scored highly, with more than one in five of those polled opting for the vehicles. More than one in four women said they preferred the space and celebrity appeal of a limousine, while a quarter of men said it was the thrill of a sports car that made the best impression.
Elsewhere, the younger generation are said to be more fussy when it comes to the right car, with 23% of 25 to 34-year-old's saying the car someone drives is important when meeting a potential partner. While regionally, 44% of drivers in the north-east feel the car someone drives is important when making an impression, as did Londoners (35%), the north-west (34%) and the south-east (32%). Just 16% of motorists in the east of the UK said the same.
It wasn't all about the cars though, as 49% of respondents admitted the first thing they usually notice about someone on a first date is their smile.
A spokesperson for Europar UK Group said: "Although we make judgements about people every day, this is magnified on a first date.
"But our research suggests that a winning smile and a prestige car with wow factor could make sure there's a good chance of a second date."
