According to the research, carried out by online retailer Gray & Osbourn, a reason for this is said to be because mothers receive style advice from their daughters as they get older.
Subsequently, 51% of women surveyed admitted they trust their daughters' opinion more than anyone else's. A further 78% of women, aged 50 and over, said they would even happily allow their daughter to choose a complete outfit for them.
However, this trust is not reciprocated, as 40% of women between the ages of 19 and 34 said they wouldn't let their mothers shop for them without supervision. A third even went as far as to say that their mothers' lack of fashion sense left them feeling embarrassed.
The statistics are in great contrast to those who are mums to boys, with only 5% of women saying they would turn to their child for fashion advice. While 28% felt that mothers of boys are less fashionable than women with girls. Husbands didn't fare much better, with just 8% of women over the age of 45 saying they would take advice from their partner.
Psychologist Honey Langcaster-James is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: "Women who don't have daughters may become less interested in style as they grow older but having a daughter, who is conscious of her own style, may keep alive her interest in looking great.
"And, because of their close bond, they also have a source of support, encouragement, and sometimes brutal honesty when it comes to their style decisions.
"More than a quarter of women believe that mums who have sons are less fashion conscious than mums with daughters.
"The most common reasons for this are that daughters are more critical, offer good advice and inspiration, and add an element of competition to look the best whereas sons seemed not to care and aren't as harsh as daughters.
"Overall, the research shows just how important relationships are between mothers and daughters and just how much women appreciate an honest and trustworthy opinion."
