According to the poll by Saga, the number of men in their 50s and 60s having children has risen by 58% in just 14 years.
In 1998, 6,043 children were born to men aged 50 or older, while in 2012, the number of men becoming fathers at an older age was 9,539. Breaking down the figures, it means that 24 children are now born to a father in his 50s every day, while around two are born to fathers already in their 60s. All of these children will have a father older than 65 by the time they reach school-leaving age, while some dad's will be in their 80s.
The figures revealed that a majority of men surveyed had already fathered children with women are still in their 30s, while last year, there were 42 men over the age of 65 who had a child with a woman who was still in her 20s.
It is thought one of the reasons behind the trend is an increasing number of older fathers, is men wanting a second chance at becoming a parent with a new partner. Quite often, older fathers are said to be financially secure and keen to start a new family.
The trend has also been highlighted by a number of celebrities who have become fathers at an older age. For example, Des O'Connor fathered a son at the age of 72 with his fourth wife, while David Jason was 61 when he became a father for the first time. Rod Stewart was 66 when he became a father, while politician Ken Livingstone was 57 when he became a dad.
Discussing the findings, Lisa Harris from Saga said: According to Saga's own data the increase in the number of Dads in their 50s is largely linked to the increase in divorces and separations in what could now be termed mid life.
"As the population ages it is becoming the norm to see new Dads in their early 50s and as the old adage goes, along with age comes experience.
"Most older dads are still fit and healthy enough to enjoy parenthood to the full and are likely to avoid the mistakes of their youth by spending quality time with their new families."
