Earlier this week, the couple released a joint statement via Paltrow's website, Goop, announcing the end of their 10-year marriage.
In the message, entitled 'Conscious Uncoupling', no specific reasons were given for the couple's separation, but according to The Sun, it is claimed that Martin, 37, felt he was "losing" his wife to her strict diet plans and her dedication to Kabbalah.
A source is quoted by the newspaper as saying: "Chris wasn't happy about it. He felt that he was starting to lose the woman he fell in love with."
Paltrow, 41, has previously spoken out about her health conscious and active lifestyle. For example, in one interview, she revealed her children ate brown rice, and said that she did not allow them to eat junk food – something her husband was unhappy with. The use of technology, such as televisions, was also thought to be an issue in the home.
"He [Chris] wanted the family to watch DVDs and TV and also wanted them to eat treats every now and then," the insider explained.
Last year, the pair and their two children, Apple and Moses, moved from the UK to Los Angeles which is thought to have been an attempt to give their relationship another chance, but the transition wasn't welcomed by the Coldplay singer.
The source continued: "He preferred living in London, mainly because of the schools for their kids and he felt settled. They also lived near Coldplay's recording studio - The Bakery.
"In LA they lived completely separate lives and disagreed about the set-up of their house. Gwyneth wanted her Goop business to really boom and so got an office set up at her home. That meant Chris didn't have room to build a full-scale studio and so he travelled away to record.
"Chris was really struggling with Gwyneth," they admitted. "Their relationship was under huge strain and he was doing everything he could to patch things up. But he felt he had no choice but to move out."
Paltrow, 41, and Martin, 37, married in a secret ceremony in December 2003, just days after they confirmed the actress was expecting their first child. The couple had already been together for a year, after reportedly meeting backstage at a Coldplay concert.
They have two children together, a nine-year-old daughter named Apple, and a son, Moses, aged seven.
