First UK Gay Marriages To Take Place

New legislation that will allow gay couples to marry in England and Wales will come into effect from midnight on Friday.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act was passed into law in July 2013, but it was only earlier this month that couples were allowed to register their intention to marry under the new laws.

Despite being made law, the controversial legislation has been opposed by the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church as well as across the political spectrum.

A number of couples in England and Wales now hope to be named the first to marry under the Act and aim to exchange their vows at 12.01am.

Civil partnerships have been legal in England and Wales since 2005, but campaigners have continued to fight to have their marriages recognised by law.
