The Paralympian made the revelation as he took to the stand for a second day to give evidence at his murder trial.
Pistorius, 27, is currently on trial for the death of Ms Steenkamp. He denies deliberately shooting dead his girlfriend in his home on Valentine's Day last year, saying he mistook her for an intruder.
Pistorius' testimony is not being filmed, but reports from the court have said that the athlete also revealed the couple had discussed moving in together.
Responding a question from his lawyer Barry Roux, Pistorius said: "I was very keen on Reeva. If anything I was more keen than she was."
"I let her just take her space - it wasn't always easy, I was besotted with her... the relationship built up to a point in December, January that we really... started caring about each other.
"We were talking about our future together, including moving to a new place in Johannesburg together."
The confession comes after messages retrieved from the couples' phones revealed they had disagreements and arguments.
One message revealed Ms Steenkamp to say: "I am scared of you sometimes."
Pistorius said about one argument: "I just think it was a bad hour in our relationship."
If found guilty, the 27-year-old athlete could face life imprisonment. He also faces charges of illegally firing a gun in public and of illegally possessing ammunition, all of which he denies.
