Priest Breaks Into Song During Wedding Ceremony

A priest in Northern Ireland has left a wedding party stunned after he broke out into song during the ceremony.

Father Ray Kelly was conducting a wedding ceremony in Old Castle, County Meath, when – at the end of the ceremony – he started to sing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

The pitch-perfect performance was a surprise to the couple getting married and their entire wedding party.

A video of the singing priest has since been uploaded to YouTube and at the time of writing, had amassed more than 140,000 views in just two days.

Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback programme, Fr Kelly shared the couple's reaction: "Normally local people know I sing at weddings, funerals or when I'm asked, but they didn't know - the bride Leah is from Dublin and the groom Chris is from Cookstown in County Tyrone.

"They were having their reception at a hotel about 10 miles away and chose our church.

"We had the rehearsal on Thursday evening and at the end I said, 'sure maybe I'll sing an aul song for you myself'. Leah grinned and said 'OK sure' but I don't think she was taking it too seriously."

Fr Kelly added that he altered the lyrics of the famous song to make it more suitable for a wedding.

For example, the opening line was: "We join together here today, to help two people on their way."
