According to The Telegraph, the case was heard at a private hearing at the Family Division of London's High Court, but details have now been released.
The couple, who cannot be named, are understood to have been married for 43 years and moved to the UK from abroad in 1976.
The publication heard how the pair owned a number of properties in different countries, including one near Cannes in the south of France. It was here where the incident took place.
The couple are said to have bought the house because the wife did not like the British weather, but her husband who had become "completely anglicised" did not like the move.
Last June, the woman's pet ram which was kept near the French home was "put to death" by the husband following an argument between the pair.
Relations between the man, 68, and his 70-year-old wife "irretrievably broke down" after this.
After hearing the case, the judge is said to have ruled that the husband, described as "a very rich man", should pay his estranged wife £170,000 a year in maintenance.
