UK's Top 'Man Crushes' Revealed

One in four men admit to having a "man crush" on a male celebrity or television star, according to a new survey.

Perhaps not surprisingly, David Beckham tops the list, with Daniel Craig, Ricky Gervais and even Gordon Ramsey making an appearance.

Some 2,000 men were polled for the study by the Celebalike app which found that a large percentage of them were comfortable enough with their sexuality to admit they envy, admire or find other men attractive.

They also revealed that it is Beckham's sporting prowess, family man image and worldwide reputation as an all-round good guy that helped catapult him to the top of the list to be the man most likely to strike awe and admiration in the heart of the average man.

Brains are also important, as proved by the man in second place – Stephen Fry.

The desire for every man to think himself James Bond saw Daniel Craig place third, while one of the world's most powerful men, President Barack Obama, was the fourth most idolised man for British blokes.

The research found the list of biggest man crushes included a mix of sporting heroes, movie stars and business role models – with actor Will Smith rounding off the top five. Television's 'tough men' Idris Elba and Ray Winston are also well regarded, as is comedian Russell Brand and actor Benedict Cumberbatch. While sporting heroes Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry are both included.

When it comes to winning adulation, raw talent was said to be the most important factor, with intelligence a close second. Confidence and a quick wit were also likely to cement a person's place on the list.

Elsewhere, more than half of those who admitted to having a man crush were adamant that, if they ever met that man in real life, they'd definitely get on well and could even be best mates. In fact, such is their devotion to their idol, that a fifth of blokes in relationships said that if their man crush ever chatted up their partner they'd feel "proud" or "privileged".

A spokesman for the Celebalike app said: "Every man has his heroes and those he aspires to be like.

"Living up to the image of a David Beckham or a Brad Pitt may not be realistic but what's clear from the results is that ability and intelligence rank highest when picking their idols.

"It's good to see such a range of respected talent showing the men who truly inspire and prompt a bit of hero worship from the average man.

"We often build ourselves on the role models we look up to, whether on the screen, a sports pitch or in real life."
