Child Bride, 14, Poisons Husband

A 14-year-old girl has admitted to killing the man she was forced to marry.

According to reports, the teenager is from the northern Nigerian state of Kano.

Local police said the girl, named as Wasilu Umar, pleaded guilty to the killing of her husband, who was more than twice her age. It is understood she concealed rat poison in the man's food.


Three other people died, while a further 10 were taken to hospital for treatment, after they all ate the same contaminated food.

The girl had been forced to marry the man, aged 35, by her father.

Police superintendent Musa Magaji Majia is quoted as telling the Associated Press that the wedding was held last week.

The teenager is likely to be tried in a juvenile court.
