GoT Sparks Baby Name Trend

Television show Game of Thrones has seen a number of its characters' names increasing in popularity – as baby names.

According to new data from the Social Security Administration, one of the names from the programme, Khaleesi, is now more popular than more traditional names like Betsy and Susannah.

In 2012, the name Khaleesi, which was invented by the author, was given to 146 baby girls.

This compares to 137 girls who were named Betsy, 138 who were named Nadine, and 111 who were named Imogen.

Interestingly, in 2010, less than five babies were named Khaleesi. When the Game of Thrones series' became a New York Times bestseller in 2011, this increased to 28, before it more than quintupled the following year.

Other named associated with the hit show include Arya and Theon. According to BabyNameWizard.com, these two names increased in popularity in 2012.

At the time of the survey – July 2012 – Arya was listed as the site's most popular name for a girl, while Theon came in at number eight on the boys' list.

However, when it comes to the figures by the Social Security Administration, only 34 Ayras and 12 Theons were registered.
