UK Church Holds First Gay Wedding

It is thought the first same-sex wedding in a church has been held in the UK.

According to the BBC, the couple, named as Jan Tipper and Barb Burden, tied the knot at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in Bournemouth on Sunday.

Last month, gay marriage was legalised in England and Wales, but it was not supported by the Church of England.

Reverend Dwayne Morgan officiated at the ceremony and is quoted by the BBC as saying the church had "taken pride in celebrating diversity".

Same-sex couples have been able to legally marry in parts of the UK since 29 March, but it is thought this is the first ceremony to be held in a religious building.

Ms Burden said: "Even though we've been together for almost 19 years, it didn't feel right for us to have just a blessing or even a civil partnership.

"We've hoped for years for the opportunity to legally marry and, once it became possible, we knew it was time for us to tie the knot and to do it before God in our church with our friends and family."
