Consultation To Be Held On Breastfeeding Law

A public consultation is to be held on a proposed new law that would allow mothers the right to breastfeed in public.

The new legislation, which could come into force in Northern Ireland by 2016, would be similar to laws already in place in Scotland, it is understood.

Currently, mothers that breastfeed are protected under sex discrimination laws, but this new ruling would offer more protection for women, with businesses and employers facing fines if they failed to comply with the law. The move would also make it illegal to prevent mothers from breastfeeding in places like cafés, bars and shopping centres.

No date for a consultation has yet been set.
