According to eBabyNames.com, who commissioned the poll, a shortlist of names was drawn up by using Social Security Administration (SSA) data. It was then put to users of the website to vote for the most bizarre name. Of those who voted, 20% decided that 'Zzyzx' was the strangest baby name they had encountered.
The name, which is said to be pronounced 'Zay-Zix', is actually real, and five babies are thought to have been given the moniker in the last 15 years.
The origins of the name is unknown, but it is known to be associated with a town in San Bernardino County, California. It is claimed to have been chosen because it comes last alphabetically on a list of US towns, so could be a tongue-in-cheek reference to "the last place on earth", the site has said.
In addition to 'Zzyzx', other bizarre names on the list include Nimrod, Zamzam and Bush.
Nomina Wells, an expert in onomastics and administrator of eBabyNames.com, said: "I know that we live in a free society and people are motivated constantly to assert their individuality, but parents need to understand that a child's name isn't about them.
"It's about someone who has no say in the matter, but must trust them implicitly to make the very best decisions for their happiness and future.
"A name with supposed 'star-quality' doesn't necessarily mean the person will have it. A name like Zzyzx, Dzyre or Jealousy will be memorable for all the wrong reasons, and resign a child to a lifetime of spelling out or explaining their name."
The top 10 'oddest' baby names, according to the survey, are:
1. Zzyzx
2. Nimrod
3. Moo
4. Lucifer
5. Zamzam
6. Dzyre
7. Jealousy
8. Bush
9. Kyller
10. Mc
