Football Can Make Or Break Relationships

Football is often the cause of many arguments between couples, a new survey has claimed.

In fact, a third of couples in the UK are in agreement that football-related arguments cause the most tension with their other half.

On the other hand, the research, which has been carried out by HTC, the official smartphone of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, also discovered that a love for 'the beautiful game' could also spark a new relationship for some.

43% of women admitted they had talked about football to try and impress a man they were attracted to, while 39% of men use the same tactic to try and impress a female.

A further 33% of men added that they are more likely to respect someone who can hold a sensible conversation about the sport. Interestingly though, the male species aren't always knowledgeable on their subject. For example, 43% of men confessed that they have previously taken an opinion they read – or heard – somewhere else and passed it off as their own; with half of them regularly guilty of this at least once a week.

It's appears to be working though, as a quarter claim they are able to get through a conversation about football by 'blagging', while 30% of those surveyed said they had found new friends by talking about the game.

What's more, when polled on what they spend most of their time talking about to friends, men said football (30%) came above partners/relationships (14%) and sex (10%).

A spokesperson for HTC is quoted as saying: "If there's one thing we love almost as much as watching the beautiful game it's talking about it, even though we might not be getting the offside rule exactly right.

"One of the strong pulls around football is the sense of identity and connection it gives us."
