The Perfect Romantic Weekend - Survey

A new survey has revealed what Britons believe to be the perfect romantic weekend.

The study, carried out by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, found that the weekend involved a daily lie-in of two hours and 42 minutes, while five-and-a-half hours will be spent exploring – with a further eight hours and one minute spent eating and drinking.

The romantic trip involves taking the Friday off work, leaving the house at 7.30am for their chosen destination and not returning until Sunday night at 8pm.

When it comes to the benefits of a romantic weekend away, two-thirds of those polled said the break helped to strengthen their relationship, while 20% said it helped to bring back a spark – and even save their relationship. For 52%, they use the holiday to explore new places, while 43% simply want to 'de-stress', and one in two want to get away from work.

It does take a while for couples to agree to a weekend away together, however, with 51% of couples only committing to a holiday with a loved one after six months into their romance, while a bold 5% said they would consider going away with someone they had only known for 24 hours.

So, when it comes to the ideal romantic spot, the study found the best place to stay is a four-star boutique hotel that is surrounded by shops, bars and historical landmarks. Furthermore, partners have £260 – on average – to spend on their other half during the trip.

Some 68% of couples said they would choose a city break for their trip, with 24% opting for a spa weekend and 13% going for a camping holiday.

Minty Woolgar, from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, is quoted as saying: "Everyone needs to be able to switch-off from time to time, rekindle relationships and do the things that you love to do. Whatever your reason for booking a break, the upcoming bank holidays are the perfect excuse to get away and take full advantage of the extra day off."
