The research, which has been conducted by Holiday Hypermarket, found that of the 2,000 Brits polled – 91% of women do not wear every item of clothing they take on holiday. In fact, women wear less than half of the items they pack. For the men though, they use at least 90% of what is in their suitcase.
According to the findings, the average man will pack 18 items of clothing for one week away – compared to women's 36 items, or which six and eight items will be pairs of shoes. As a result, it's probably not surprising to discover that females are more likely to go overboard on the packing, with some 53% having been over their personal baggage allowance in the last five years. A further 77% of men also claim their partner has used their suitcase to take additional clothes away with them on a break. Some of the items included, but never worn, are socks, pyjamas and hats.
The move can prove disastrous for some though, with more than two-thirds of couples admitting they have argued while organising luggage for a holiday. The most common reason for a disagreement was said to be "unnecessary items" taking up space – such as tea bags.
Nevertheless, women are in control when it comes to the packing, as just 5% said they would be happy to let their other half sort out the holiday luggage, while 42% of men in a relationship said they let their partner pack for them.
Kay Dixon from Holiday Hypermarket, said: "The most surprising result from the survey is how many women tend to pack their fella's bags, leaving their partners to just carry the bags!
"It's also staggering how much remains unworn on holiday and the huge gender divide on this."
