Arkansas Overturns Gay Marriage Ban

A judge in Arkansas has overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage.

According to reports, Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza claimed the state has "no rational reason" for the ruling. He added that the legislation, approved by voters, violated the rights of same-sex couples.

He is quoted in the press as saying: "This is an unconstitutional attempt to narrow the definition of equality."

It is not clear when gay couples will be able to seek a marriage licence.

In 2004, voters overwhelmingly supported changing the constitution to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

Last year, the US Supreme Court ruled that a law forbidding the federal government from recognising same-sex marriages was unconstitutional and in recent months a number of states were said to have quashed bans on gay marriage.
