According to reports, 27-year-old Mariam Yahya Ibraim is currently being held in detention along with her 20-month-old son after she was accused of converting to Christianity.
The court had initially given the woman three days to recant on her Christian faith and return to Islam, but she refused. She then returned to court and was told by Judge Abbas al Khalifa: "We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged."
The accused was also charged with adultery for marrying a Christian man.
Local media has said the woman, who was born to a Muslin father but raised as an Orthodox Christian – her mother's religion, was convicted under the Islamic sharia law that has been in place in Sudan since 1983. It outlaws conversions under threat of death. Mariam Yahya Ibrahim is understood to be married to a Christian national of South Sudan. The country won independence in 2011, but the court has argued her marriage to a Christian man is not valid under Islamic law which says Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslims.
It is not clear when, or if, the sentences will be carried out, but AFP reports that for the charge of adultery, she was sentenced to 100 lashes which will be carried out when she has recovered from giving birth. The death sentence by hanging would not be carried out for two years after she had given birth, they added.
The ruling has sparked international outcry, with Amnesty International describing the sentences as "abhorrent", and called for the woman's "immediate release".
