1 In 5 Online Daters 'Unrecognisable'

A new survey has discovered that a third of online daters have been left disappointed when they meet up with a potential date for the first time – because they look nothing like their profile picture.

The research, conducted by LoveFlutter, found that 21% even went as far as to call their date "unrecognisable" when they met them in person.

The figures may not appear that surprising though, when it is revealed that a quarter of Britons admit to using a profile picture that is more than five years old. While for 48% of respondents who have picked a potential partner purely on their looks, have been left to suffer an evening of boredom and awkward silence as they fail to hit it off.

When it comes to taking profile pictures, women take an average of five attempts to achieve the "perfect selfie" for their dating profile, while a quarter use filters on Instagram to 'boost' their attractiveness. It doesn't always work though, as 67% of men claimed selfies are a "turn-off" and they are less likely to talk to someone if they post a selfie.

For 56% of people, they said they would rather receive a compliment on their personality than their looks.

Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a Professor of Business Psychology at University College London, is quoted as saying: "Dating has been trivialised by apps that focus too much on looks and too little on essential human qualities. Wit and personality can be sexier than looks and unlike looks determines long-term compatibility."

Research Psychologist, Dr Andrea Kallias, added: "With the obsession of the selfie and digital narcissism, more and more focus is being placed on looks alone.

"We all want an attractive partner, of course, but what we need is someone who is psychologically compatible."
