The 29-year-old tied the knot with The Klaxons' James Righton last May in a small ceremony in France, and in an interview with Glamour, she said the couple could spend lengthy periods of time apart due to their busy schedules.
She explained that she does go on tour with her husband "a little bit", as: "You want to be slightly part of each other's world so you can see what makes them tick.
"If one person is on tour for three months and the other's on a film set, your lives become very separate. It's tricky. You should have your own thing, but equally you have to build a life together."
The actress, who shot to fame in the movie 'Bend It Like Beckham', added that marriage had never been a priority in her life. When asked if she had always wanted to settle down and tie the knot, she said: "Not at all! Actually, my parents kept saying, 'Why bother?' I think they only [got married] to get a mortgage.
"But when James proposed, I just thought, 'Well, never done that before.' It seemed like a fun thing to do."
Knightley and Righton starting dating in February 2011.
