Divorcing Couples 'Better Behaved' If Kids Are Involved

Couples going through a divorce are said to be better behaved if they have children, it has been suggested. There is also said to be less conflict between the spouses.

The comments were made by Kaleel Anwar, a Family and Divorce Solicitor at Slater & Gordon. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Anwar used the example of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin and how the former couple continue to remain friends despite going through a high-profile divorce.

In March, the couple released a joint statement confirming they had decided to end their 10-year marriage.

At the time, they said: "It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.

"We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

"We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."

Following this "consciously uncoupling" decision, the estranged couple have been spotted together on a number of occasions. Their united stance is said to have left many wondering how they have remained civil towards each other, and speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Anwar explained that – whether famous or otherwise – "wanting what is best for your children" is what makes the difference when it comes to an amicable divorce between a couple.

He added: "My clients tend to grow up, they don't want conflict around the house. Also, I inform them that there's good research to suggest children perform better and are healthier and/or happier when Mum and Dad aren't at each other's throats."
