The couple, who had been married for 10 years, issued a joint statement in March confirming they were to separate, in a move they described as "conscious upcoupling".
They have since been spotted together on a number of occasions, but while the pair are thought to be trying to work through issues, Martin is also said to be enjoying his new single status and is understood to have recently spent time with Rihanna and Alexa Chung.
According to Look magazine, an insider is quoted as saying: "Chris seemed so broken by the split and rumours he begged Gwyneth not to end it, but now he appears to be embracing his freedom. He's realising he's free to do what he wants. And he's enjoying it.
"I don't think he sees the Rihanna or Alexa thing as anything serious, but it's exciting to spend time with other women. He can spend time with his wife, but also see other people and flirt. It's the best of both worlds."
However, the source added: "Chris and Gwyn still love each other and their family so much. It took them a year to split up because there are still so many feelings there, and I think if Gwyn asked Chris to come back, he would."
Paltrow, 41, and Martin, 37, married in a secret ceremony in December 2003, just days after they confirmed the actress was expecting their first child. The couple had already been together for a year, after reportedly meeting backstage at a Coldplay concert. They have two children together, a 10-year-old daughter named Apple, and a son, Moses, aged eight.
