Parents 'Feel Judged' On Decisions They Make

A large number of parents feel judged about the decisions they make for their child, a new study has found.

The research, which has been carried out by Nurofen for Children, found that 68% of parents feel some sort of judgement regarding their choices. Of the issues they feel most judged on, diet and nutrition topped the list with 50% of parents, while 43% worried about parenting style. A further 33% said their child's behaviour.

A majority (90%) did consider themselves to be 'confident' parents, but 14% of mums and 16% of dads confessed they felt like they were being judged "all the time" by other people.

According to the women polled, other parents are the most likely to judge (20%), with mother-in-laws (16%) and a woman's own mother (16%) also guilty of passing judgement. For the men, 20% said their parenting technique is never scrutinised; but found their mother-in-law to be quick to pass judgement (16%), along with other parents (14%) and then their own mother (13%).

When it comes to asking for advice however, 39% of mums tend to turn to their own mother for support. This is closely followed by a GP (34%), other parents (20%) and friends (19%). Others wish their partner was more helpful (25%).

Interestingly, 18% of parents said the decisions they had made for their child were not right the first time, with those in the 45-55 age bracket most likely to admit to mistakes. Those parents between the ages of 18 and 24 were the most confident, with 25% saying they had made the right choices for their child.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Nurofen for Children, said: "There are plenty of instances where as a parent you question the choices you are making for your child – particularly when it comes to health issues.

"We want to encourage parents to talk to each other for support and advice and be confident in turning to their GP or pharmacist for further advice when needed. Crucially we want parents to feel that they are making advised decisions that are best for them and their child."
