Research Shows Wedding Dress Spend Remains The Same Over Decades

New research, studying wedding in the US, has revealed that the average amount spent on wedding dresses today is remarkably similar to that spent in the 1930s.

Compiled by Quartz, the research compared data from 2013 – the Knot survey of nearly 13,000 brides – and a survey of 154 couples in 1939.


The comparison found that in the 1930s on average 25% of a households income would be spent on a wedding, compared to 49% in 2013 – however, it must be factored in that the average household income was significantly lower in the 30s.

In contract the amount spent on a grooms suits has dropped to around a quarter of what would have been spent in the 1930s.
