The research, commissioned by eHarmony, found that the average wait for someone in the UK to say those three little words is 112 days into a relationship. However, for the Welsh, they take 50 days less than the national average. As for Londoners – they take an additional 63 days more than the average.
Other regions were love is in the air include East Anglia, East Midlands, the North East and North West, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire and Humberside. Scotland lags behind when it comes to expressing romantic feelings, as the study found they take 154 days to fall in love. They are closely followed by the south east and south west regions.
When it comes to saying 'I love you', those in East Anglia are said to be the most passionate as they will tell their other half they love them 21 times a week – six times more than the national average.
Those in the South East say it 20 times, while the North East claims third spot with 17 declarations of love a week. Londoners say it an average of 15 times, with Scotland falling behind with just three times a week.
Interestingly, men are twice as likely as women to be the one to first admit how they feel, while the summer is said to be the best season for a declaration of love. Saturday was found to be the most popular day of the week to say 'I love you', while again it's the men who are more likely to remember the day the admission took place compared to women.
Public declarations of love proved unpopular with respondents, with many preferring to utter the words in private, such as at home with their partner, or while they are cuddling in bed.
Jemima Wade, a spokesperson for eHarmony, commented: "The study shows that whilst the meaning behind I love you is universal, the when, where and how we say it is truly unique – which is what makes it special for every couple. It's interesting to see that those three little words not only say a lot about the person we love, but reveal a lot about us all as individuals."
Dr Glenn Wilson, an expert in attitude and personality measurement, is also quoted as saying: "The UK has a broad spread of local culture that comes with differing levels of openness in communicating love.
"Those living in urban areas are often more cautious and pragmatic with their feelings, partly because of their fast-paced lifestyles but also because of the perceived dangers that come with living in a city.
"In contrast, rural areas generally have a much stronger sense of community – with families often based in the same area for a number of generations. In such close-knit communities, people tend to be more open and willing to share how they feel."
