Williams, 63, was found dead at his home in California on Monday in what has been reported to be an apparent suicide.
In a statement to The New York Times' shortly after the actor's death, Ms Schneider said: "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken.
"On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during out time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin's death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."
In July, a representative for the actor confirmed he had checked into a rehab facility in Minnesota as part of his continued sobriety maintenance plan. He is not thought to have relapsed.
On Monday, it was revealed that Williams was "battling severe depression" prior to his death.
Williams and Schneider wed in October 2011 in California. It was the actor's third marriage. He was previously married to Valerie Velardi from 1978 to 1988. They had one child together, a son named Zachary, now 31. From 1989 to 2008, Williams was married to Marsha Garces. They had two children together, a daughter named Zelda, now 25, and a son, 22-year-old Cody.
