The man, named as Tucker Blandford and from the US, was engaged to 23-year-old Briton Alex Lanchester. The couple were due to marry last weekend, but details of the incident are only starting to emerge.
The couple first met in August 2012 in Connecticut, where Mr Blandford is from and where Ms Lanchester was studying abroad for a year. They were soon engaged but then Lanchester had to return to the UK. They kept in touch and planned their wedding, but a couple of months before the big day was to happen the bride-to-be received a phonecall.
According to The Mirror, she received a call from someone claiming to be the father of her fianc้. They told her that her partner had been suffering from depression and had been killed in a car accident. Left devastated, Ms Lanchester later rang Tucker's parents to pay her condolences only to be told he was alive and well. In a further blow, her parent-in-laws-to-be also had no idea about the wedding because Tucker had claimed the couple had separated upon Alex's return to the UK.
Speaking to reporters, it is understood Tucker was "scared" at how fast the relationship was moving and was not sure how to end the engagement. He is quoted as saying: "I'm a terrible, awful person. I know I shouldn't have told her I was dead, but I didn't know what else to do.
"I got scared and wanted to get out of the relationship. It was moving extremely fast and with us being in different countries, it was really hard. At the time I just felt like I couldn't tell the truth and thought if I could just postpone everything it would be better."
Speaking to the publication, Ms Lanchester said: "All I ever did was love him. After this I'm not sure I can trust a man ever again."
