On 29 March, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 came into force in England and Wales, allowing same-sex couples to legally marry in the countries for the first time. Since being made law, the ONS has now said that 1,409 ceremonies have taken place. Of these, 56% were female couples, and 44% were male.
In the first three days of the new legislation being in place, 95 same-sex ceremonies were held. In April, there were 351 marriages, 465 in May and 498 in June. The ONS added that the average age of women tying the knot is now 37 years of age, with men being 38.6 years old.
It has been said that the number of same-sex marriages could rise in December, as this is when couples who are currently in civil partnerships will be given the option to convert their union into a marriage. In Scotland, the first same-sex marriages are expected to take place in October, while Northern Ireland does not have any plans to change its current marriage legislation and allow gay marriages to take place.
