Parents Fear Children Won't Make Friends

A new poll has found that one in three parents are worried that their child will not make friends when they start school.

The study, which involved more than 2,200 parents in Britain, was commissioned by the charity Action for Children, which revealed that making friends was just one of the concerns parent's experience as their children start a new school year.

For example, 11% said they are worried that their child will struggle with lessons, with the same percentage concerned that their child would not ask for help when it is needed. Some 6% of parents gave another main worry with regards to their offspring starting school.

Commenting on the poll, Jan Leightley, acting executive director of operations, said: "The first day at school is an anxious time, sometimes more so for parents. Our centres help them to prepare youngsters for their first year at school by giving them a place to play with other children, to learn to make friends and to develop their language skills."
