According to Rolling Stone magazine, the 68-year-old singer filed the divorce papers in the couple's hometown of San Mateo, California, on 29 July.
A hearing is said to be taking place on 12 December.
The pair have two grown children together, a son called Ben and a daughter named Amber. Neil is also a father to Zeke from a previous relationship.
