Two Die In Explosion At Wedding Party

Two people killed in an explosion in Cumbria at the weekend are said to have been technicians who were working on a fireworks display for a wedding party.

At around 3.15pm on Saturday (30 August), a loud bang was heard in the Windermere area, followed by a number of smaller explosions.

It is thought the fireworks for the display had been stored in a shed when they caught fire.

The body of a man and a woman were later found in the shed.

Police said no one from the wedding party was reported missing in the incident. It has been reported that the deceased were technicians preparing the display.

It is understood around 70 people were in attendance at a house in Ecclerigg, near Windermere, at the time to celebrate the wedding of local insurance boss John Simpson and his partner Nicole Rothwell. The couple had married earlier in the week and were holding a party to celebrate their union. An evening fireworks display was due to be part of their celebrations.

A joint investigation is now underway into how the explosion occurred.
