The pair, named by the Huffington Post as Keith Hinson and Michelle Knight, officially ended their three-year marriage last Friday (29 September). They have remained friends since their separation and in an interview with the paper, they said they decided to take the photograph because they did not want their family or friends to feel awkward around them.
Mr Hinson is quoted as saying: "Michelle and I have a good sense of humour about this and we also wanted to let people know that this didn't have to be a negative experience.
"We are choosing to move forward with love. We've been separated a year, and throughout that time, we've both been committed to preserving our friendship."
The couple's 'divorce selfie' was posted to Hinson's Instagram account, where he captioned the image: "We are officially un-married. Here's to the most friendly, respectful, and loving split imaginable. We smile not because it's over, but because it happened."
