New Mums Under Pressure To Lose Weight

Almost half of women have admitted they feel pressurised to lose weight as quickly as possible following the birth of their child.

A new study, conducted by parenting website Wauwaa.com, found that 40% of mothers felt that slim celebrity mothers made them feel that they needed to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight as quickly as possible.

While many famous mums appear to bounce back to their original figure just weeks after giving birth, however, for many mums the process takes a lot longer. In fact, the survey found that it takes the average new mum one year and seven months to lose the weight.

Of the 1,500 women polled who had given birth in the last five years, a third felt their partner put pressure on them to lose weight, while 18% said their mother wanted them to get back into shape. For 16% of new mums, they also had the additional pressure from the mother-in-law.

Elsewhere, it was claimed mothers gain 2st 6lb during their pregnancy, with a third admitting they gained more weight than they expected to. Not surprisingly though, following the birth of their child, losing weight was not a priority for the majority.

64% said for the first few months of motherhood, they had absolutely no routine at all and struggled to make it through the day. During this time, 63% of mums confessed that they had 'let themselves go', with regards to make-up or clothes. When it came to losing the baby weight, shrinking the tummy and hips as quickly as possible was the main aim, with breast-feeding, healthy eating and exercising the most common methods chosen by women.

A spokesperson for Wauwaa.com commented: "There are unrealistic expectations on new mums to lose baby weight, but most mothers have a different set of priorities after having a baby.

"The new arrival undoubtedly takes over your life and for many women their appearance is the last thing on their mind, the priority is the health and happiness of your baby.

"Sleepless nights, constant feeds and the shock to the system that having a baby can bring can really take their toll and getting back in to pre-pregnancy weight shouldn't take precedence."

They continued: "Every woman is different and some will find it much easier to lose weight than others. You hear some new mums say the weight just dropped off and others who never fully regain their pre-baby figure. It's only natural that new mothers want to look and feel great."
