Ben Haenow famously hit the headlines earlier this year when, during his arena audition for the show, he told the judges he and his girlfriend were "looking to get married sometime soon" – much to the surprise of his girlfriend.
Now, however, the singer has said he is "embarrassed" by his comments, and told a number of media outlets that he would not be proposing during the live shows which begin this weekend.
Speaking about his girlfriend's initial reaction to the wedding news, he admitted: "They played that on Good Morning Britain again and again, just the reaction. I was lying in bed pulling the covers up, But I definitely said it.
"We've been together for six years and it is something that we have talked about. I think the amazement or the wonderment on her face was because she probably thought I was going to go, 'And bring her out!' We've had some serious discussions.
"The mother-in-law's been [nudging me]. But she is the girl I want to spend the rest of my life with and start a family with."
He continued: "At the moment this is a big thing for me and I want to see where it takes us, but we're definitely going to go there together, wherever we go."
When asked if he was planning to pop the question on the show, he told Digital Spy: "No. No. Not at all. I couldn't do it. I honestly couldn't. This isn't a platform for me to get my relationship in place.
"It's a singing competition," he explained. "And she wouldn't want that – that would be a private thing for us and she'd never want that."
